A roof you can open and close
A smart pergola is a patio cover with a roof that moves. Aluminum louvers pivot open for sun, close solid for shade, and shut tight against rain — from a phone, a remote, or automatically when the weather turns. It is the closest thing there is to a backyard with a volume knob.
We build ours with StruXure, and we are going to be specific about why rather than tell you to elevate your outdoor living experience. If you are spending this kind of money, you deserve the actual reasons.
What is a smart pergola, exactly?
A traditional pergola has a fixed roof. Open slats give you dappled shade and no rain protection. A solid patio cover gives you rain protection and no sun, ever. You pick one and live with it.
A louvered pergola gives you both. The louvers rotate, so at noon in July you close them down to a slice and sit in shade; in October you open them up and let the sun in. When it rains, the louvers interlock and water runs off through gutters integrated into the frame — and with an optional Somfy rain sensor they close on the first detection of rain, whether you are home or not.
It is a real roof when you want one and open sky when you do not. That is the whole product.
The part that matters in Ogden: snow
Here is where these systems get sold badly in Utah. A motorized louvered roof is a lovely thing in Phoenix. In Ogden it has to survive a winter.
That is the single biggest reason we build with StruXure. Their Pergola X is, per StruXure, the only pergola on the market with ICC certification — the certification that speaks directly to structural loads, including snow. It matters at the permit counter and it matters in February.
The system is fully extruded aluminum with stainless steel fasteners and an AAMA 2604 powder coat finish. If you are putting a motorized roof on a house at this elevation, the frame under it is not where you save money, and a louvered system that cannot document how it handles snow load is not one we will put our name on.
StruXure backs it with a limited lifetime warranty that transfers if you sell the house. Worth knowing before you compare it against a cheaper louvered roof with a five-year warranty.
What you actually get
Beyond the moving roof, the things people actually use:
- Automatic weather response. Sensors close the louvers when it rains and open them in high wind so the system protects itself.
- Zones. A single zone spans up to 12 ft by 20 ft. Zones link together for bigger spaces and each can run on its own — shade over the table, open sky over the grill.
- Heat, light, fans and sound built in. Not bolted on afterward; the beams are designed to carry them so the wiring disappears. We order StruXure heaters for exactly this reason — heat is what turns a three-month patio into a nine-month one in Utah.
- Attached or freestanding. Off the back of the house, or standing on its own.
- Six standard colors — white, beige, bronze, adobe, black and gray — plus custom colors.
- Scheduling and scenes. Louvers on a timer, or one tap that sets roof, lights and heat together.
What we have actually built
We are not describing a brochure. We have installed StruXure here in Ogden, including a single-zone Pergola X with an integrated heater, worked from StruXure’s own louver cut sheets and shop drawings.
Here is the part almost nobody shows you — the louver cut sheet. Every louver is cut to length before it ever reaches your yard.
That is what separates a real installer from a website. These are engineered systems — they arrive with layouts, louver schedules and structural details, and somebody has to read them, get the posts and footings right, and get it through the city. A pergola that opens and closes is a structure with a motor in it, and it gets permitted like a structure.
We also build plain wood and aluminum pergolas and standard patio covers, and we will tell you when one of those is the smarter buy. A motorized louvered roof is serious money. If what you want is shade over a table three months a year, we will say so and quote you the simpler thing.
Common questions about smart pergolas
Will a louvered pergola handle snow in Ogden?
That is the right question, and it is why we build with StruXure. Pergola X carries ICC certification — per StruXure, the only pergola on the market that does — which addresses structural loads including snow. A louvered system without that documentation is not one we would install at this elevation.
What happens when it rains?
The louvers interlock when closed and water drains through gutters integrated into the frame. With the optional Somfy rain sensor they close automatically at the first detection of rain.
How big can it be?
A single zone covers up to 12 ft by 20 ft. Multiple zones connect for larger spaces and can be run independently.
Can I add heat and lights?
Yes, and it is the upgrade we push hardest in Utah. Heat, lighting, fans and speakers integrate into the structure rather than hanging off it. A heated pergola is usable most of the year here. An unheated one really is not.
Do I need a permit?
Assume yes. It is a structure with footings and electrical. We pull the permit and handle the inspections.
Is it worth it over a regular patio cover?
Sometimes not. If you want a fixed roof over a table, buy a patio cover and spend the difference elsewhere. If you want to control sun, shade and rain across the whole season, nothing else does that.
